Full Moon Rise over NYC Skyline

Last weekend I went out to Liberty State Park to shoot the full moon rise over the NYC skyline. This was the evening of the blood wolf moon. I was hoping to get a nice video over the world trade center. The blood moon wouldnt happen until after midnight but it was still a good opportunity to have a unique video!

I got there about an hour early before sunset. The moon was going to start rising about a half hour before sunset. Liberty State Park is one of my favorite photography locations because of its easy access and great views.

Before the moon rise I shot the Empire State Building zoomed in with my 55-300mm lens because there were some pretty cool clouds. I used a 3 second interval for this.

My plan was to shoot the Empire State building until I saw the moon rising over the skyline. It was incredibly windy which is why there is some shake in the videos!

Once the moon appeared, I changed my angle and started shooting the Manhattan skyline. I put this video very underexposed. My last time shooting the moonrise, I realized how bright it looks, almost like a sun. This time I really underexposed, almost to the point the city was black. The shadows in editing are easy to bring back so you have more flexibility.

The shot turned out really cool!

I think there is still some other things to try like bracketing.

After a little while I really zoomed into the WTC to get the moon going across the tower. This was again a 2 second interval but was also much darker. The weather was very cold and windy. This turned out ok but still needs some improvement!
